I’m going to do only the main guitarists, and this is my opinion
Jack Sherman: underrated as a guitarist but didn’t fit the Chilis Hillel: well we all miss Hillel. Very underrated as a guitarist and I wonder if Hillel hadn’t have died, how RHCP would have come out because it would be different to now. John Frusciante: very, very, very unpopular opinion but I didn’t think John “fitted the band”. Yes good guitarist but flea nearly quit the band because John was writing most of music and the band is/still is about working in harmony with each other so I don’t like John. But I love his solo work including PBX, enclosure, Foregow and Trickfinger 2. Arik Marshall: great fill in for John. Although shy and relatively unknown, remains one of my favourites to date. Dave: although many slate dave, I quite enjoyed OHM and Circle of the Noose Josh: My favourite guitarist in RHCP. My two favourite albums are I’m With You and The Getaway because they bring something new and the band are working finally in harmony for a long while. Plus, Josh can’t be any kinder to fans. I’ve met the band and they’re all nice, and Josh is an absolute sweetheart and many people don’t realise that he fits in very, very well in the band.

I think he's often overlooked in the rock community overall. He's a guitar player but not a rockstar to me, maybe that's why that happens.
In my opinion, John is an extremely creative guy, to the point where it became kind of a problem in the band (as Antony said about the By The Way album). But his chemistry with the band, his huge talent, the way he sees and feels music, he's one of a kind.
I miss him as a guitar player because he's one of the best, but I totally understand that he had basically done everything with the Chili Peppers and as a guitar player in general, and wanted to try different stuff which he enjoys rather than playing an instrument that doesn't give him the feeling that he's looking for in music anymore. In fact, an unpopular opinion I have is, I think after Stadium Arcadium, John leaving was a good move for the band to shake things up a bit.

Although I don’t miss him, I know he contributed to the band well. It’s the fact that people are still hating on Josh because he isn’t John which I think is extremely unfair. Josh is very sweet and a great guitarist, John was too. I understand you can’t stay in one place all the time and John felt like he had to move on.

I think he gets about the right amounts of accolade. He's not underrated and he's not overrated.
Josh, however, is VERY underrated.
